Vernon Philpott brings Matthew 5:7 "Blessed are the merciful, for
they shall receive mercy." Now the focus is outward after the first
four beatitudes focused inwardly. What we do now will come back to
us later, as in loving those who do not love us in return. All of
the descriptions of those who seek God — poor in spirit, mourners,
meek, craving righteousness, merciful, etc. describe the life of a
Christian but go against the common culture.
